"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15
How many of you have heard that when it comes to the 2024 Presidential election that you should vote for the lesser of two evils? This has been something I have heard thrown around as a solution when you just don’t know who is worse, Trump or Harris. Just recently, Pope Francis urged his Catholic flock to cast their ballot for the “lesser evil.” He cited that both Trump and Harris are against life and has for a long time criticized Trump’s treatment of migrants. I do not support the Pope at all, as I feel the catholic church is a corrupt institution, but I do know the Bible and his comment on the migrants and life were both biblical. There are many people that are against migrants coming into our country, and I understand their concern for safety, but the fact of the matter is that it is clearly written in the Bible not to suppress or mistreat a foreigner. “The foreigner living among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. Leviticus 19:34 There are bad people crossing our borders, and there are families with children coming over that are so desperate to leave the danger of where they live that they are willing to sacrifice their safety and life just to get here. My grandmother was a migrant. Her husband was killed in World War II, and as a widow with a newborn daughter she fled England to come to America to live the dream that so many foreigners long for. I have people in my family that disagree with me on multiple things, but it doesn’t change the fact that I can open the Bible and let God’s word do the talking. If you want all the wonderful blessings of a life devoted to Christ, then we can’t cherry pick scripture to suit our cause. It’s all right there in black and white, and if you really want some humbling of pride, then you should read the words written in red. The thought that we should be directed to vote for the lesser of two evils doesn’t sit well with me. I say, no. I have three choices here, and I choose the one I can live with. Don’t vote. Let’s dig into this theory of picking the devil with the shortest horns. “Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 1 Corinthians 5:6 This is one of the main problems in our world today; tolerance for what is wrong and turning a blind eye to sin for the sake of inclusion.
Both candidates claim to be Christian, which gives every Christian the responsibility to evaluate their actions and their words with righteous judgment. It is not our business to judge those outside of the church, that is for the Lord to do, but within the church and fellowship of Jesus the Christ, we are to call out sin within the church and hold our brothers and sisters in Christ accountable for their actions. If I know something is wrong and I don’t say anything, then the Lord will hold me accountable. I don’t want the blood of the evil doer on me because I didn’t speak out to warn others they could get hurt by this person, or because I did not show them the way to healing from their sin. We have a responsibility to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with the Lord as spoken in Micah. Do justice; this means to make sure justice is done and to act if it is in our power to do so. Love mercy; this means we are to be merciful as the Lord is merciful to us. Walk humbly with the Lord; this means we are to be humble servants of God and not be proud or boastful. We are not to think we are something when we are nothing. We are the Lord’s and His mark of ownership is upon us, as we are blood bought for a very high price. Light rules those that are the Lord’s, and when darkness is allowed to come in, then the shadow of evil is present. “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Matthew 6:23
Every person that casts their vote for one of these candidates will do so according to their own personal interest according to the political party represented. There are a handful of hot issues on the ballot, and everyone has their eyes on the ones that benefit them the most. When you think about what motivates the voter, it is all based on self-interest. I mean, this is the way of thinking in our world today, “I want this, who can get it for me?” Unfortunately, money is most people’s top priority. It even ranks higher on many voters list of wants, than the killing of a baby in the womb of a mother. If that isn’t some messed up priorities, then I’m a monkey’s uncle. I can’t remember a presidential candidate that won because he was just a good, Godly man and everyone loved and respected him. Reagan comes to mind. How lovely that would have been, but that isn’t the world we live in now. These "Christian" candidates have forsaken their Christian morals and values just to get a vote, and the public is more than happy to weigh their own morals in the balance of the “lesser of two evils” to get their own way. To me, I must make a decision I can live with. If it grieves the Holy Spirit, it grieves me, as I am a vessel for the Spirit. Which has me wondering, how many people are without the Spirit? “Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:17
Again, those that do not know the Lord are not for Christians to judge because they are of the world and do not know Him, but these candidates say they know Him, worship Him and belong to Him. If that is the case, and they stand for truth and justice then I am going to hold them to what I know is biblically true, and I am going to present my case as to why I would rather cut my right hand off than to enter heaven with a sinful hand. I am not going to do something that goes against my insides because someone tells me it is my civic duty or right to do so. I have the right to eat 10 pounds of fudge, but I’m not going to do it. I know what’s good for me, and I know what isn’t. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”-but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12 If we betray our conscience at any time for the sake of meeting the status quo, we care very little for our faith and more for the opinion of the majority.
For me, abortion is one of the main issues I have as a Christian. Both candidates would allow abortion according to different standards. Is there a "lesser of two evils" here? Well, one would allow more murder than another, but murder is murder, and I am not in agreement with what I know to be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. There were more than two concentration camps during the Holocaust. Did one camp become less evil because it threw less live babies into the furnace? “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissention among brothers.” Proverbs 6:16-19 “Hands that shed innocent blood.” Since when did everyone that claimed to be Christian decide they were going to stop following the teaching of the Bible? Why do you sit in the church listening to false doctrine when you were taught the correct way? If you belong to one of these denominations then you are sitting in agreement with the beliefs of the church and your church is Pro-Choice, which is a fancy way to say “it’s up to you whether you want to kill a baby or not and we aren’t going to tell you that you’re wrong. Your feelings are more important than a life.” Some mainline Protestant denominations such as the Methodist Church, Episcopal Church, United Church of Christ, Presbyterian Church, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and many others are permissive of abortion. A church that doesn’t address sin is a lukewarm church that has left its first love to follow the ways of the world, and the Lord says He will spew you from His mouth. There is a lack of fear and reverence for the Lord in this world today, and if you agree with sin, then you are in agreement with the enemy. “But the solid foundation that God has laid cannot be shaken; and on it are written these words: “The Lord knows those who are his” and “Whoever says that he belongs to the Lord must turn away from wrongdoing.” 2 Timothy 2:19
Both candidates will have to answer to the voters and to the Lord for all they do and speak. We will have to answer to the Lord for what we do as well; our actions, our speech, did we feed those that came to us hungry? Did we clothe those that were naked? Did we help that man on the street? We can be a voice for the voiceless, but we don’t have to sign our name on something that we don’t believe in. These two candidates are the Lord’s instruments and although I wouldn’t be a guest at their table, I would give them a drink if they were thirsty. We are to be Christ-like in all matters. Jesus came to preach repentance, and that sinners should turn away from sin, he never gave the sinners a murder loophole so they could continue to murder under a lesser degree of punishment. That's the governments playground. "Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness." 1 John 3:4 The Lord’s will is going to be done in this election whether I vote or not, and He will use Trump or Harris as vessels for His glory or for His destruction to serve the purpose He has for them. He can frustrate the minds of the people and of nations. He can grant wisdom and knowledge to anyone He chooses, and He can put a hook in the jaw of a nation and turn them to war. His hand is in all things, but my hand will not be in this. They will be folded in prayer that His will be done, and His Kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:36-38
Fun fact - Kamala Harris and Donald Trump were both sworn into office with their left hand placed on two stacked Bibles. Only three Presidents in history chose not to place their hand on a Bible during the swearing in process; John Quincy Adams used a volume of law; Theodore Roosevelt took his oath without any books or religious texts; and Lyndon B. Johnson used a Catholic missal.
